Briars USA, a non-alcoholic distributor headquartered in central New Jersey, is a subsidiary of High-Grade Beverage (HGB), a franchised wholesale distributor of malt beverages, wine, spirits, and soft drinks. Established in 1937, Briars USA currently distributes a diverse range of products, including Monster, Vita Cocoa, Function Drinks, Cintron Beverages, Jones Soda, 24 C, Muscle Milk, Sunny Delight, Sweet Leaf Tea, Redline Energy, and Welch’s Juices.
Historically, Briars USA may be more renowned for its Birch Beer. Nevertheless, the company has consistently introduced popular flavors over the years, such as Black Cherry, Diet Black Cherry, Cream, Diet Cream Soda, Diet Root Beer, Lemon, Sarsaparilla, and Grape Soda.
High-Grade Beverage Company was founded in 1940 by Nicholas DeMarco and Harry “Butch” Levine. The business was situated on Redmond Street in New Brunswick and comprised only six employees: three delivery personnel, two sales representatives, and one secretary. Over the years, the company experienced significant growth, culminating in the 1986 acquisition of Briars USA, a soft drink bottler.
The aroma is commercialized and lacks uniqueness. However, it did evoke the scent of Barq’s. The initial sip was enjoyable. It is a well-balanced blend, but the excessive carbonation is not to my liking. The sweetness level is slightly higher than I prefer. Could it be the “Invert Sugar” listed as the sugar?
Although the head was slightly below average, it would make an excellent root beer float. Within 30 seconds, there was no trace of any head remaining.
This beverage offers an exceptional balance of caramel, vanilla, and carbonation. The initial sip was delightful, evoking a sense of satisfaction. However, the carbonation level exceeded my personal preference.
I was pleasantly surprised and would consider purchasing this beverage again. While it may not be my top-rated choice, it is close to the top ten. I nominate this beverage for a root beer float! The more I consumed, the more it reminded me of my fondness for Taco Bell. The initial bite is exceptionally delicious, but by the third bite, I realize I am consuming something. By the fifth bite, it becomes indistinguishable from any other root beer I could find.
It is worth trying. While it has a slightly sweet taste and higher carbonation than I prefer, it may appeal to those who enjoy commercial mixtures like A&W or Barq’s. I would consider purchasing it again.
